I must say I am amazed that the Barry Zito derby ended before the end of this year, but hell, he'd be an idiot not to take this kind of money:
(via ESPN)
Barry Zito is staying in the Bay Area with the San Francisco Giants.
Sources told ESPN's Peter Gammons that Zito will receive a seven-year contract from the Giants, with the deal averaging approximately $18 million per season. Zito will be formally introduced by the Giants this afternoon.
Gammons reports that Zito picked the Giants over the Rangers, Mets, Yankees and Mariners. In additon, sources told Gammons that the Yankees never made a formal offer.
I guess Omar Minaya will have to start working the phones in January.
And now I can't wait for the Mets fans who call The FAN to freakout for weeks upon end. In the end, it's pretty simple--Zito is not worth that much financial and time commitment. Let's see what the kids can do.

But is overpaying, even for a mediocre #3 starter, worth it in order to upgrade over the existing Mets projected rotation behind Tom Glavine?
Nah, still not worth it. I predict some sort of trade to solidify the group they have going into spring training, and then maybe a mid-season deal.
I'll start panicing on 7/29 if the pitching stinks.
I agree, overpaying for Zito would have seemed a desperate move, and Omar is going to look better longer for not caving into the fan pressure.
Also, I am sure that come Jun/Jul, some team will fall out of the race and make some player available and the Mets will swoop in to improve their rotation.
Any thoughts on the Lastings Millidge to Oakland for Joe Blanton deal that is alledgely in the works?
I would pull the trigger on that deal. I think Milledge is the next Alex Ochoa.
